What Is Sales Velocity and How Do You Calculate It?

Sales velocity is open deals times win rate times average deal size, divided by cycle length. It shows what your sales process earns per day and where it slows.

Short answer

Sales velocity shows how much revenue your sales process generates per day. Multiply the number of open deals by your win rate and average deal size, then divide by the length of your sales cycle in days. Once you see which of the four numbers dropped, you also see why sales slowed down.

What is sales velocity?

Sales velocity is how much revenue your open deals turn into per day, given your current win rate and cycle length.

It combines four things in a single number: how many deals you have, how many of them you win, how big they are and how many days they take to close. A revenue report tells you what happened. Sales velocity tells you which lever caused it.

How do you calculate sales velocity?

Sales velocity is calculated with this formula:

Sales velocity = (Open deals × Win rate × Average deal size) ÷ Sales cycle (days)

Example: your CRM has 40 open deals. Over the last 12 months your win rate was 25%, the average won deal was 150,000 TL and the average sales cycle was 60 days.

  • 40 × 0.25 × 150,000 TL = 1,500,000 TL
  • 1,500,000 TL ÷ 60 days = 25,000 TL per day

As things stand, your sales process produces about 25,000 TL a day, roughly 750,000 TL a month. Hold that number against your target.

Which CRM fields do the four numbers come from?

Each number comes from a field your CRM already holds. Pull all four from the same period, with the same rules.

  1. Open deals: deals that are still open and have seen activity in the last 90 days. Leave stale records out.
  2. Win rate: deals won in the last 12 months divided by deals won plus deals lost. Deals that are still open don't count.
  3. Average deal size: the average value of deals won in the same period. Exclude records with an empty or zero value.
  4. Sales cycle: the average number of days from the date a deal was created to the date it was won.

Why does sales velocity come out wrong?

Messy CRM data makes sales velocity wrong, and usually better than reality. The formula is simple, the data is the hard part.

  • Zombie records: open deals nobody has touched in months inflate the deal count. Count 60 deals instead of 40 and your velocity looks 50% higher.
  • Losses that never get closed: if lost deals are never marked as lost, your win rate looks higher than it is.
  • Deals created late: if reps open the deal at the proposal stage, the cycle looks shorter, because the first meeting never made it into the record.
  • Missing values: deals without a value drag the average down or quietly drop out of the calculation.

Clean up these four issues before you calculate, or you will be making decisions on the wrong number.

Which number should you improve first?

If deal count, win rate or average deal size rises by 20%, sales velocity rises by 20% too. The cycle works the other way: cutting it from 60 to 50 days also lifts velocity by 20%.

Starting from the same 25,000 TL a day:

  • Cut the cycle from 60 to 50 days and velocity rises to 30,000 TL a day.
  • Raise the win rate from 25% to 30% and you also land at 30,000 TL a day.
  • Grow open deals from 40 to 48 and you get the same result, but that usually takes more marketing budget.

Where you start depends on which lever is cheapest for you to move. Shortening the cycle often needs no new budget. The stages where proposals stall or the decision maker shows up late are already visible in your CRM.

How should you break sales velocity down?

Don't stop at a company-wide average. Break velocity down by rep, product, channel and customer type.

Example: two reps can bring in the same revenue by month end. One closes 20 deals in an average of 40 days, the other has 50 deals that take an average of 90 days. The second rep's portfolio is full but slow, so they need help with stuck deals more than they need new leads.

The same goes for channels. If deals from trade shows and deals from your website move at different speeds, split your marketing budget accordingly.

How often should you track sales velocity?

Calculate sales velocity once a month, using the same period rules every time. A weekly figure swings too much with a single large deal.

Compare the number with your own history. Another company's velocity doesn't account for your product or your cycle. If it falls three months in a row, check which of the four numbers dropped, because the cause usually sits in one of them.

What do you have, what are you losing, what do you gain?

You already have every piece of this calculation. Your CRM stores each deal's creation date, value and outcome.

What you are losing without noticing is the hours spent in meetings asking "why did sales slow down?" Track velocity through its four parts and the answer comes from a table, so the team can turn to the right lever.

FAQ

Is sales velocity the same as sales cycle length?

No. The sales cycle shows how many days a deal takes to close. Sales velocity combines the cycle with deal count, win rate and deal size, and turns them into daily revenue.

What is a good sales velocity?

There is no universal number. Compare yours with the daily equivalent of your target and with last quarter's figure.

Can I calculate sales velocity in a spreadsheet?

Yes. Export open and closed deals from your CRM and calculate the four numbers separately. The hard part is repeating it every month with the same rules.

Do lost deals count?

Yes, in the win rate. Deals won plus deals lost form the denominator.

Can a new sales team use sales velocity?

With only a few closed deals, win rate and cycle length aren't reliable, because a single deal moves them a lot. Until then, track deal count and time spent in each stage.
